Vienna, W.Va.—Following a hard-fought 3–2 win over nationally ranked Northwood University (Midland, MI), the Fighting Scots men’s soccer program saw its national ranking improve to #2 in the nation. The ranking in the NCAA D-II Men’s Soccer United Soccer Coaches poll is the highest ranking ever for an OVU sports team. It is also the highest national team ranking in the history of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
“I am excited about the start of the men’s soccer season. The program continues to grow in all areas. Our student-athletes and coaches have done an outstanding job,” OVU athletic director Chad Porter noted.
The Scots followed the win against Northwood with a 5-0 whitewashing of perennial conference power Davis & Elkins College. They lead the G-MAC in the early-going with a 2-0-0 record. The women’s team also leads the conference with an identical record. Both programs were picked to win conference championships.
The men’s team is lead in scoring by freshman Jorge Pradillos (Madrid, Spain) with seven goals on the season. Action in the D&E game included another assist by national leader sophomore Alexandre Horveno (St. Nazaire, France). He has seven assists in five games.
“Yes, we feel good about the national ranking,” added fourth-year head coach Luis Rincon. “But what we want to remember is that this season is about making it to the final four.”
