From climate change, to water purification and global health issues, Ohio Valley University’s Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental & Sustainability Studies has been designed to provide students with the scientific tools and interdisciplinary perspective to offer sustainable solutions to humanity’s most pressing environmental problems. Students in the program can seek to enter the workforce directly after their bachelor’s degree working in the private sector, government, or non-profit organizations or pursue environment-related graduate degrees in natural sciences, business, law, or social sciences.

Faith & Science

At a faith-based institution, this degree program will frame the academic study of the environment and sustainability within a worldview emphasizing the goodness of God’s creation, the ecological consequences of human sin and rebellion, and the ways in which humanity can faithfully steward Earth’s environment and resources. Thus, students will not only gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to help them to be successful professionals in environmental and sustainability fields, they will also develop a Christian worldview for their life’s work.

Core Curriculum

  • Natural Science Core: General Biology I & II, General Chemistry I & II, Physics I, and Organic Chemistry I & II
  • Environmental Sciences: Environment & Sustainability, Physical Geology, Energy Resources & Efficiencies, Oceanographic & Atmospheric Science, Microbiology, and Ecology
  • Environmental Social Sciences: Environmental Economics, Environmental Science & Policy, and Introduction to Geography
  • Environmental Humanities: Environmental Ethics, Environmental History, and Environmental Literature
  • Research Tools: Intro to Statistics, Mathematical Modeling, Geographic Information Systems, and Professional Writing

Program Structure

This program provides a flexible, small group learning environment where students take most of their major courses together. Students will also take elective coursework in the natural sciences, business, or social sciences to best meet their vocational aspirations.

Capstone Project

All students will complete a senior project as a requirement for graduation, but the program offers options depending on a student’s plans. For instance, students seeking to find a job after graduating with a bachelor’s degree will engage in a real-world practicum experience or applied project. Students interested in continuing their education or pursuing graduate degrees in the sciences will conduct directed research projects.
